Calamity Jane was a pilot project that I worked on as the Character Design director. The premise was a post-apocalyptic series where the world ended sometime after the 80s, and the survivors of this desolate land are just trying to get by the best they can, centered around our two protagonists, Cassius and Clay.
This was meant to be the next in house series for Floyd County Productions, to succeed Archer, but unfortunately the project never made it past an unaired pilot.
I led a small team of designers as we worked with our Art Directors to build out this world that the story was set in. We had to do a ton or research in 80s and post-apocalyptic fashion, finding a way to marry the two and give the designs a sense that nothing is new, and every material you could get your hands on has a purpose.
Above is a character style exploration I worked on before the project got started. The studio is known for the "Archer" style, and we tried a few different versions out before we landed on Design Style AB (B). (background paintings done by Kat Stockton)
As you can see, we spent a lot of time really building out the look and feel of our characters for this series!
These characters known as the "Killbillies" are a murderous cannibalistic group of inbred humans that eventually, after years of inbreeding, no longer really resemble humans.
