For Legion, we were tasked to create an animated "astral plane fight" between David and Farouk for a finale showdown at the end of their second season. As the Art Director on this project, my duties were to establish the overall look and design. From the look of the characters in original form to the many different morphs of animals and fighters, I was tasked with managing a team to create all of the designs for any variation. My responsibilities also included creating key poses and layout for animation, and making sure the overall aesthetic stayed on model with the original designs. We turned in a completed animation sequence, that was then comped with lighting and VFX that you see in the final results.
The video above is not the final result, just an early pass at it as we've changed some animation. Due to the final compositing and treatment on the aired version, you can't see all of the amazing boarding, shot planning, and animation that our artists achieved with this project. I wanted to share a work in progress file so you can see how we approached it.
